This course will examine military aspects of the war, as well as political developments during it, including the political history of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural. The course also examines the post-war Amendments and the Reconstruction era.

Instructors: Lucas E. Morel is Associate Professor of Politics at Washington and Lee University. He is the author of Lincoln's Sacred Effort and has published widely on Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and slavery. Mackubin T. Owens is Professor of Strategy at the U.S. Naval War College. He has published widely on civilian-military relations, Lincoln, Grant, and the military strategy of the Civil War.
