Application for Free Summer Institutes for
Social Studies Teachers

The Free Summer Institutes for Social Studies Teachers are offered at no charge to teachers. Each participant will receive a $500 stipend for participating, paid at check-out on the last day of the institute. Housing in air conditioned residence halls at Ashland University will be provided. All meals, from dinner on the day of arrival through lunch on the last day, are included.

Each institute is a rigorous six-day graduate-level program beginning at 9:00 am each morning and concluding as late as 8:30 pm each evening, with an extended afternoon break. Participants in the summer institutes will be participating as audit students in courses that are part of Ashland University's Master of American History and Government degree program. The courses will be held on the campus of Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.

Teachers are expected to prepare for and fully take part in the discussions during the week. Assigned books will be mailed four-to-six weeks before the institute. There may be additional readings which will be made available on our website. These must be printed by participants prior to arrival.

Graduate Credit: Teachers may choose to earn two semester hours of master's degree credit from Ashland University for participating. This credit can be applied toward the Master of American History and Government offered by Ashland University, or may be transferred to another institution. The two credits cost $440. Teachers who opt to take the institute for credit must complete all assignments for the institute—generally a research or seminar paper, a comprehensive exam, or a combination of items—and will receive a grade on the A to F scale.

To Apply: Fill out the application below. You must complete the entire application to be considered. Applications are due by March 15, 2010. You will be notified by mail of your selection status on or after April 1, 2010. Each accepted applicant will be asked to submit a $100 check deposit after being accepted in March to reserve a place in the institute. This check will be cashed upon receipt and a refund of your deposit will be issued on the last day of the institute. If you cancel before May 31, 2010, you will receive a full refund of your deposit. You will forfeit your deposit if you cancel after May 31, 2010, if you do not attend, or you do not stay for the entire institute.
