The Early Republic

Having adopted a form of government, the Americans had to make it work. This course examines their efforts to do so, as the Republic took shape amidst foreign dangers, political conflict, westward expansion, and religious revivals.

Instructors: Stephen Knott is Associate Professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College. He is the author of Alexander Hamilton and the Persistence of Myth; Secret and Sanctioned: Covert Operations and the American Presidency; The Reagan Years; and Rush to Judgment: George W. Bush, The War on Terror, and His Critics. Michael Schwarz is Assistant Professor of History at Ashland University. He has authored multiple essays on Founding-Era politics and diplomacy.
