What is an "American"?

Sunday, July 8, 2012 to Friday, July 13, 2012

Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio

From the moment of the Revolution, Americans and observers about the world believed that Americans were doing something new and unprecedented. This led some to ask in bewilderment and others in expectation, "What then is the American, this new man?" This course considers two answers to this question, one provided by Benjamin Franklin, the other by Mark Twain.

Instructors: Christopher Flannery is Professor of Politics at Azusa Pacific University and the Louaine S. Taylor Professor of American History & Government at Ashland University. He is Senior Editor of The Claremont Review of Books and has written on the liberal arts and American political thought. David Tucker is Associate Professor of Defense Analysis and Co-Director of the Center on Terrorism and Irregular Warfare at the Naval Postgraduate School. He has published on Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, and is the co-author of United States Special Operations Forces.
